Approximately 19,200 employees worked in primary aluminum production plants in the U.S. in 1992. Through 1990, the average employee output has increased an average of 5% per year since 1982 (see chart). The total value of shipments for companies classified as primary aluminum smelters was $5.8 billion in 1992.
